North Carolina families

Every child deserves strong relationships with both parents.

Both Parents NC is a new effort by North Carolina parents who believe children should keep strong, meaningful relationships with both parents after a separation, wherever it's safe. We're building a place where you can add your support for constructive, child centered reform. One direction we're exploring is more equal parenting time, with strong protections for families facing abuse or safety risks.

Safety comes first. If you or your children are in danger, call 911.

What we believe

Children should be able to keep both parents in their lives, wherever it is safe.

  • Children first.

Every choice starts with what helps the child.

  • Safety always.

Strong relationships matter, and safety comes first.

  • Dignity for every parent.

We treat parents with dignity without assuming every parent or family situation is safe.

  • Honesty.

We say only what we can back up, and we say what is still being built.

  • Constructive hope.

Every problem we name comes with a next step.

North Carolina legislation

The bill we're following

In 2025, Senate Bill 162, titled Shared Parenting, was filed in the North Carolina Senate. It was referred to Senate Rules and did not receive a hearing. Bills that don't pass expire when the 2025 to 2026 session ends, and new bills can be filed in the 2027 session.

We're studying what a strong 2027 bill should include, with clear protections for families facing abuse or safety risks.

Proposed direction, not final

The direction we're exploring

We're exploring reforms that could move North Carolina toward more equal parenting time after a separation, so children can keep strong relationships with both parents.

Every family is different. Some parents live far apart. Some work nights or travel. Some children have special needs, and some are teenagers with their own schedules. Good reform makes room for real life.

How we handle facts

  • We check before we share.
  • Research and advocacy stay separate.
  • A law passing somewhere else isn't proof it worked.
  • Stories are shared only with consent, and children are never identified.
